I just think it's sad that Jenny and I had to have this conversation last night, but I guess this is just what people are like.
She was talking to me about when they went to computer today and how she was running to get in there and sit by her friend. She said Mrs. Elmore made her sit next to Lorelai. I said, "Don't you like Lorelai?"
She said, "No, she's fat."
I explained that she doesn't have to dislike someone because they are fat. You can be someone's friend no matter what size they are. She said, "There's nothing else wrong with her except she's fat." I explained that just means that she's bigger than Jenny, not that she can't be her friend. Jenny got distracted by the bigger than her comment - she said, "She's not bigger than me - we're both 6." So then we had to talk about what being bigger means.
I don't think this conversation had any impact on her at all, but I'm hoping that she won't be the kind of kid who will be mean to those who are different. Lee's always told me that is just what kids are like, and the other kids in her class are probably the same way, so she's probably following their lead. But maybe conversations like this help change that!
